GIVING THEM A HOME

Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary is a federally recognized 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the rescue of unwanted and abandoned exotic animals,

with a particular focus on primates. Located in Greenwood, Missouri, Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary cares for over 250 animals from a multitude

of different species. We are passionate about the preservation and protection of these beautiful animals, as well a helping to educate people on why many

exotic animals do not make ideal pets.  Many of the animals in our care were purchased as pets by people who found they could not handle them.

RESCUE

We rescue unwanted and abandoned exotic animals and ensure that they

have a safe environment to live out

the rest of their lives. Many of the

animals we have would have died

had our organization not

intervened.

REHABILITATE

We rehabilitate the animals in our care

and ensure that they have the best possible veterinary care available.

FEEDING

Each day we provide meals for over the 250 animals in our care.  While some animals eat very little, collectively their

diet is a tremendous financial

 commitment for our organization.

HOUSING

Each of our animals requires unique

housing based upon their species.

Unique temperature requirements,

size, temperament, health and

risks to our staff and volunteers

all determine how we can

house these animals.

THE FOUR KEY FUNCTIONS OF OUR ORGANIZATION

"They come here after they're too hard to handle or too expensive to keep,  and then we

maintain their lives for the time that they have left to live, however long that is."

DANA SAVORELLI - Founder & Director, Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary

 MONKEY ISLAND RESCUE AND SANCTUARY

FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR - DANA SAVORELLI

From a very early age Dana Savorelli has been working with and teaching others about animals, their handling, care and conservation. His passion for animals led him to create Midwest Tongs, the world's leading company for the creation of innovative tools specifically designed for the handling of animals in captivity and the wild. Midwest Tongs is the first choice among professionals around the globe for the safe and humane handling of reptiles, mammals, and other animals. Midwest Tongs are even found in industrial or commercial settings where safety in reaching and lifting are paramount. Dana is a recognized expert in the humane handling of animals in captivity and the wild.

Dana founded Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary as a place of rescue for unwanted and abandoned exotic animals. Without his intervention, many of these beautiful animals would have died from neglect or euthanasia. Each day, Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary cares for over 250 animals with food, shelter, medical care and enrichment. The animals vary from apes and monkeys to cobras and sloths. Each species has special diet and habitat requirements along with round the clock monitoring of their health and welfare.

Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary is a federally recognized 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, care and housing of unwanted and abandoned exotic animals. Additionally, MIRAS is licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture as a requirement for some of the species in their care. MIRAS was founded by Dana Savorelli, who operated as its director. MIRAS is located in Greenwood, Missouri. The facilities are not open to the public, however the organization operates a very active FACEBOOK page where people can see their work, learn more about the animals, ask questions and donate to support the organization.

Those local to the Greenwood area interested in volunteering at Monkey Island Rescue And Sanctuary may contact us directly for an application. To volunteer you must be over 18. Experience working with animals is helpful, but not required. Ideal for college students studying biology, zoology, veterinary medicine, or other life sciences fields.
